In the first few years of life, babies learn a lot about the environment and their surroundings by exploring through their senses. This encourages babies' development.

Exploration is a crucial part of early childhood learning. Sensory play is play that involves using one or more of the five senses: sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing.

Adults are guided through the world by their senses; children use these as a basis of discovery. It is important for children to be provided with the opportunity to explore different materials in order to learn about it. Young children will develop their cognitive skills through sensory learning.

The Five Senses

To encourage exploration of sight babies can be provided with mirrors. As they explore the mirrors they will enjoy looking at themselves and pulling faces in them. The use of binoculars or kaleidoscope can also encourage young children to explore by sight.

Smell can be encouraged by providing children with the opportunity to smell a variety of different smells. In the summertime children can be taken into the garden or to a nearby park to enjoy the different smells of flowers and/or grass. Alternatively indoors children may enjoy exploring soaps and scented candles.

Young children are prone to putting everything in their mouths. It seems this sense is very important at an early age. It is a good idea to allow children to explore as many different flavours as possible. Fruit and vegetable tasting can be a fun activity which incorporates many senses (sight, touch, taste, smell). Children can also be involved in baking activities. This gives them an insight into how things are made before they eat them.

For children to explore using touch provide a "feely bag" with a variety of different textures. It is best to use natural materials as opposed to toys made for the purpose. Cork, felt, wool, wood, are good materials to provide. During winter time snow and ice make for good materials to explore.

To explore sound, babies and toddlers enjoy music and movement. Providing opportunities for dance and allowing the child to experiment moving their bodies to movement helps to develop physical development. Even before children are mobile they will wiggle side to side and begin to clap hands. Musical instruments are also a great way to encourage young children to explore sound. Drums, bells and tambourines prove to be popular choices.

Ways to Encourage Exploration in Every Day Life

Every day experiences provide opportunities for children to explore their senses. It is important to allow children to have a sense of freedom when they explore whilst knowing you are still nearby. Daily activities such as dressing and bathtime are full of opportunities to use their senses. Try to provide activities that will allow children to use as many of the five senses as possible.
